With the exam season just a few months away, we were pleased to invite to College Sander de Groot from MADE Training to host a workshop with our students to talk about best practice revision techniques and exam preparation.
A compulsory session for students across all year groups, this lively and engaging workshop covered a number of essential skills to aid their revision and enhance their focus and retention of information. These skills included:
Benchmarking - an analytical process that helps students to measure their progress and prioritise target areas
Active reading - questioning, reflecting and evaluating information presented in a text
Mind mapping - used to visually organise information to show relationships between topics and ideas
The memory palace - a technique that taps into a person's spatial memory (ability to remember places)
Revision planning - including effective time management
Cue cards - encourage students to condense and filter information, improving understanding and retention
These sessions were a great success; the feedback we received showed that 97% of the 70 students who attended felt that the content was useful and that they would be taking these techniques away to use for their own revision.
They said that the workshop,
"Helped bring fresh ideas on how I can study"
"Improved my ability to remember things"
"Helped me find new ways to revise"
"Helped identify my weaknesses and how to approach them"
The students - particularly in Years 11 and 13 - were encouraged to try these new techniques in their revision in order to maximise the effectiveness of their study in the coming months and to complement the revision topics they will continue to study in class.
